Dr.Patta Radhakrishna is a renowned Surgical Gastroenterologist and a Laparoscopic Surgeon in Chennai. Presently he is the chief of Surgical Gastroenterology and Laparoscopic Surgery at SIMS (SRM Institutes for Medical Science), Vadapalani, Chennai.
He has graduated from the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Institute and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry in 1986. He subsequently did his initial surgical training at Stanley Medical College, Chennai and obtained a degree MS (General Surgery) in 1989. Soon thereafter he joined MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology) course at Madras Medical College and obtained his super-specialty degree in 1992 under the chairmanship of Prof.N.Rangabashyam a pioneer Surgical Gastroenterologist of india in the very first attempt. At that period of time Madras Medical College was the only center in India offering MCh course in Surgical Gastroenterology. During his tenure in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Proctology in Madras Medical College he had the opportunity to perform and assist complex GI surgeries. He obtained first-hand experience in assisting and performing some of the complex Esophageal, gastric, colo-rectal, hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgeries in addition to enormous amounts of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic work. This became the platform from which his career in GI surgery took off. Dr.Radhakrishna’s thesis during his stay here was on ‘Corrosive injuries of the esophagus and stomach’.
Three and half years he had worked as a Senior Resident in the Department of Gastro-intestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi under Prof. Samiran Nundy, yet another pioneer in Surgical Gastroenterology in India. The GI Surgery unit at AIIMS (GISAIIMS) is the most renowned GI unit in the Indian sub-continent catering to patients not only from all over India but also the neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In this unit he was directly responsible for care of patients with GI bleeding, especially in those with portal hypertension, surgery for ulcerative colitis, surgery for surgical obstructive jaundice etc. This unit was very systematic in treating these conditions and had its own structured Indian Management Protocols that are followed to this date, the country over. Dr. Patta Radhakrishna had extensive experience in the laboratory work in relation to liver transplantation and also had the opportunity to be involved in the first ever liver transplant done in AIIMS in 1995. He has presented numerous papers on behalf of the unit at various conferences. During his stint in AIIMS he had a month long training in laparoscopic surgery under Dr. Pradeep Choubey, the famous laparoscopic surgeon at the Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.
